What is the three word styling method?

I’ve been extolling the virtues of the three word styling method since before 2017, when I wrote my best-selling book, How To Dress. Simply put, the three word styling method is the quickest, most efficient way to save you time and money and streamline your wardrobe. Once you’ve chosen three words that describe your style you’ll find you always feel like you in your clothes and getting dressed will be a breeze!

ABOUT
My 3 Words

  • Think about all the outfits that you wore, which made you truly feel like you. What got you the biggest compliments? Which hold the best memories? What were you wearing at your happiest and most confident? You’ll find there is a common thread throughout these outfits, which you will be able to describe by style, colour, silhouette, fabric or era. To give you an idea, my three words are Sixties, Denim and Tomboy. Once you’ve worked out those words, I’ll bet that if you have items in your wardrobe with the tags still on, they won’t chime with your words and your most worn and most loved pieces definitely will.

  • This is the game-changer. When you shop, if you choose something that doesn’t tick your three words, put it back. You’ll never wear it, however much it calls to you. If you do make the purchase and actually wear it, you’ll likely feel uncomfortable and ‘off’. Save yourself the money and the wardrobe space and leave it in the store.

Bonus: When you build a wardrobe where all your clothes have a similar vibe, they’ll all go together, meaning you won’t have morning wardrobe rage about nothing matching!

  • Conventional shopping sites divide their wares by item, which is fine, but I spend so much time trawling through dresses, say, that even once I’ve filtered by length, fabric and colour, uncovering a piece that suits my style leaves me exhausted. And I’m a professional!

Instead my3words.co will do the hard work for you. Once you know your style is Classic, for example, you can go to the Classic section and find an expertly curated edit of pieces that you know will suit your look. Then you can narrow it down to see blazers, or shirts. There is so much clothing in the world (that’s a whole other issue…) shopping can leave you overwhelmed and confused. No-one has time to wade through pages of product so I’ve developed my3words.co to streamline the retail experience and leave you time to get on with the other important things in your life.

  • I’m a fashion stylist and writer with over 20 years of experience in the industry. Former fashion director-at-large of GLAMOUR UK and fashion director at Stylist magazine, I’ve contributed to Sunday Times STYLE, The Telegraph, Grazia, V, Vogue Brasil and international editions of Harper’s Bazaar. I’ve also have worked commercially with L’Oreal, Amazon, Stella McCartney and M&S.

I’ve collaborated with household names such as David Bailey and Rankin and styled celebrities including Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, Florence Welch and Kylie Minogue. I’ve appeared on BBC Radio 4’s Woman’s Hour, You and Yours, BBC Radio London and Times Radio and regularly host events, take part in panels and talk all things fashion and style.

My first book, How To Dress, was published in 2018, became a #1 best-seller in Amazon’s fashion category and was reprinted in 2023 due to demand. I now ghost-write for selected projects and combine this with personal styling, helping women define their style, audit their wardrobes and shop for specific events.
